RAICES LATIN MUSIC COLLECTION
TOURING EXHIBITION
Raices: The Roots of Latin Music in New York City

The Raices Latin Music Collection & Museum, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, is pleased to announce the availability of its traveling exhibition, “Raices: The Roots of Latin Music in New York City, which premiered at the Museum of the City of New York.  The history of Latin popular music known world wide as SALSA began centuries ago in the islands of the Spanish Caribbean, at a time of slavery and colonialism, and yet, is tied to 20th century New York and the growth of Latino communities in New York’s barrios. A cultural phenomenon, this dynamic exhibition explores the history and evolution of SALSA.

The exhibit, Raices: The Roots of Latin Music in New York City pays homage to the recognized pioneers and overlooked individuals whose vibrant music has left an indelible imprint on American culture. Curated by musician and folklorist Louis Bauzo with special tributes to Machito, Tito Puente, Miguelito Valdes, Vicentico Valdes, and others, Raices: The Roots of Latin Music in New York celebrates New York City's Latin music legacy. For a virtual tour of the exhibit guide, please visit, www.MCNY.org on marked exhibitions, under the heading of previous exhibitions you will find Raices

The Raices Latin Music Collection & Museum documents the genre’s folkloric roots in Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, and the subsequent development of Latin Jazz and Salsa in New York City.  Established in l979 at the Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts, by Ramon Rodriguez and Louis Bauzo, the Raices Collection, with over 19,000 objects, is dedicated to the research, preservation, and promotion of Afro-Caribbean Latin Music, and conducts ongoing public programs such as historical concerts, exhibitions and symposia that use the Collection as their nucleus.   Located in East Harlem,  Raices is engaged in four distinct areas of programming: preservation of the Collection, expansion of the Collection, public education and outreach and developing resources to be able to provide access by national audiences and future generations.
