Dance at Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts
THE FOLKLORIC PROGRAM

The Folkloric Program offers the opportunity for the serious beginner, as well as the more seasoned student, to learn traditional dances from around the African continent. Dance is the touchstone for what will be a unique multi-disciplinary experience of music, song, movement, history and language.

Afro-Caribbean
Children will move to the sounds of live drummers as they experience the movements, and learn the dances of the caribbean islands of the African Diaspora.

West African Dance I & II
This interdisciplinary class for beginners and intermediate dancers offers history, traditions and dance of West Africa in weekly hour-long sessions. It is for those with an interest in learning about West Africa, as well as developing and broadening movement skills. The rigorous warm-up builds strength, stamina and endurance. Through poly-rhythms and diverse movement vocabulary, students learn about the different regions and dance styles that exist in West Africa.
Age: 9 & older

West African Drumming Ensemble I & II
Girls and boys ages 9 and older learn rhythms and techniques of West African drumming. The "how to play" the djembe, and the jun jun is taught in group lessons for beginner and intermediate students. Students fine tune their skills in their lessons as they prepare to play as an ensemble accompanying the West African Dance classes.

Studios are appropriate for classes, workshops, rehearsals and auditions equipped with pianos and mirrors, changing rooms and equity approved dance floors.
