Dance at Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts
a comprehensive course of study for children and young adults, girls and boys, ages 4 -18.

Students will:

  • explore, and experience the joy of movement and dance
  • gain physical awareness, self-esteem, discipline, confidence and respect for dance as an art form
  • learn a variety of movement styles
  • build a solid technical foundation in classical ballet, modern, jazz, and tap.

ADMISSION

Registration for the Dance Division takes place in September for the fall/winter semester, and in February for the winter/spring semester.

To receive the full benefit of the dance program, students enrolled in September for the fall/winter session are encouraged to continue the school year by re-registering in February for the winter/spring session.

New registration in February is limited to open enrollment classes, and students with previous dance experience.

To Enroll in the Dance Program Students Must:

  • interview with the Dance Director or Assistant to the Director; students with previous dance training will be scheduled for a "placement class"
  • submit a completed application
  • submit the applicable registration fee
  • pay tuition fees in full, or request a payment plan once 50% of the tuition balance is paid

Studios are appropriate for classes, workshops, rehearsals and auditions equipped with pianos and mirrors, changing rooms and equity approved dance floors.

PROGAM AND CLASS DESCRIPTIONS


DANCE EXPOSURE PROGRAM
The Dance Exposure Program offers the perfect dance introduction for beginners to learn fundamental dance vocabulary through the styles of ballet, modern and jazz. Classes in basic tap, hip hop, latin dance in addition to music appreciation and a percussion class round out this diverse movement experience.

Dance Exposure I,  & II
A two-year program, this class exposes students to the elements of ballet, modern and jazz while teaching the ABC's of dance.
Age: 6 - 8; 9 - 11
Day: Saturday
Three 9 week sessions throughout the year for two years

Music Exposure
A music appreciation class for 6 and 7 year olds. The introduction of the basics of reading music,  rhythmical patterns, elements of solfeo, melody and scales enhances children's listening skills, and lays a foundation for future study in dance and music.
Age: 6 - 8

Percussion
This group class encourages students to explore and play various percussion instruments. Playing congas, shakers, claves, and cowbells introduces basic counting, and rhythms, engages listening skills, and nurtures the importance of ensemble work.
Age: 8 -10

Teen Dance
Teens with little or no experience gain strength, and stretch while developing basic dance vocabulary and technique. Class begins with traditional ballet barre exercises that prepares the body for more contemporary modern, jazz and broadway dance styles.
Age: 12 & older

Latin Dance
Mambo, Cha Cha,  Salsa, Merengue are just some of the dances that  will be taught in this class. Students ages 12 and older will enjoy learning footwork, and partnering in this fun filled dance class.

Funky Hip Hop I, II & Teen Hip Hop
Children will experience familiar movement with a fresh,  bold theatrical flavor as they move to contemporary sounds of today's R & B, and Pop. These age appropriate classes for the children ages 8 & 9, 10, 11, & 12 and teens are ideal for those with or without experience.

THE FOLKLORIC PROGRAM
The Folkloric Program offers the opportunity for the serious beginner, as well as the more seasoned student, to learn traditional dances from around the African continent. Dance is the touchstone for what will be a unique multi-disciplinary experience of music, song, movement, history and language.

Afro-Caribbean
Children will move to the sounds of live drummers as they experience the movements, and learn the dances of the caribbean islands of the African Diaspora.
Age: 10-12

West African Dance I & II
This interdisciplinary class for beginners and intermediate dancers offers history, traditions and dance of West Africa in weekly hour-long sessions. It is for those with an interest in learning about West Africa, as well as developing and broadening movement skills. The rigorous warm-up builds strength, stamina and endurance. Through poly-rhythms and diverse movement vocabulary, students learn about the different regions and dance styles that exist in West Africa.
Age: 9 & older

West African Drumming Ensemble I & II
Girls and boys ages 9 and older learn rhythms and techniques of West African drumming. The "how to play" the djembe, and the jun jun is taught in group lessons for beginner and intermediate students. Students fine tune their skills in their lessons as they prepare to play as an ensemble accompanying the West African Dance classes.

THE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM
This Saturday program builds a solid technical foundation in dance. Ballet technique is stressed while students are exposed to a variety of other movement styles.

INTRODUCTION TO BALLET
A pre-requisite for Ballet Fundamentals, this class is a formal introduction to ballet technique for students with some previous dance experience. Vocabulary is taught slowly, developed in simple barre exercises, and students are taught to transfer the basic skills to simple movement phrases.
Age: 8 - 11

BALLET FUNDAMENTALS
This beginner technique class places strict attention on alignment and placement of the body. Students develop strength, coordination of arms and legs, and learn proper execution of ballet technique and movement.

BALLET I, Level I
This class is designed for students who have knowledge of the basic ballet vocabulary and can exhibit proper turn-out and carriage of the torso. This technical training builds memory recall, strengthens the ballet vocabulary, develops clarity of line and prepares students to proceed to the next level of study.

GESTURES BALLET II, LEVEL I
This level II class designed for students to develop speed and control of movement while expanding their knowledge of the ballet vocabulary. Dancers take on extended, complex movement phrases, while continuing to develop strength and technique.

MODERN FUNDAMENTALS
Students explore the concepts of space, time, energy and dynamics through pure movement. The emphasis of this class is to maintain the creative spirit through self exploration while developing style, technique, and performance presentation.

MODERN I, Level I
This class broadens a student's movement experience with the exploration, development and execution of contemporary movement from diverse techniques and style.

MODERN II, Horton Based
This class teaches the technique of Lester Horton, while developing an understanding of the anatomy and the musculature of the body.

MUSICAL THEATER DANCE
This class introduces students to basic vocabulary of the Broadway dance number. Students will learn the qualitative elements that help an actor or beginning dancer move with ease and presence on stage. Basic warm-up and stretching exercises develop coordination, while "across the floor" and "center movement combinations" provide a full body workout that improves body awareness.

JAZZ FUNDAMENTALS
This fun filled class is for the beginner student with some previous dance training, or the student who has completed the Dance Exposure Program and Introduction to Ballet. Learning basic jazz terminology, vocabulary and style enables the student to explore various dimensions and dynamics of movement while increasing strength, stamina and flexibility.

JAZZ I, Level I
This energetic class provides continued study for students to develop in the jazz style. More complicated warm-ups, isolations, jumps, floor progressions and movement phrases enables the body to adapt quickly to various styles.

JAZZ II
This class is geared for the serious-minded student looking to excel at jazz technique. Study includes movement quality, musicality, progressions and jump sequences that challenge students to become competent in diverse movement styles. Students practice body isolations to fine tune the eyes and body.

BASIC TAP
This beginner class introduces basic tap vocabulary, the technique behind the steps and the "glorious" sound of tap.
Age: 8 - 11

TEEN TAP
Children 12 and older learn basic tap vocabulary and the technique, behind the fundamental steps. Quickly students begin exploring the style of tap, and learning movement phrases.
Age: 12 & older

TAP FUNK I
This class is for those students who have mastered the fundamentals of basic tap and want to go further in their study. Placing the focus on clarity of sound, the introduction of simple combinations and improvisations, students develop their own personal style of expression.

TAP II
Tap study continues with the exploration of complex rhythms, increased speed and longer, more complicated movement patterns.

TAP WORKSHOP
Designed as a lab for the advanced tapper, this class will teach students to use their feet as musical instruments. Students work closely with the instructor to learn intricate footwork and create movement phrases.
Day: Saturday

BOYS FITNESS & DANCE
This class seeks boys ready to embark on an athletic dance experience. Under the guidance of a professional dancer and personal trainer, boys will explore the shared physical aspects of dance and athletics while developing strength, stamina, endurance and ease of movement.
Age: 9 -12



THE LEAP PROGRAM
Calling all high school bound students, male and female, preparing for entry into dance programs of specialized high schools!
Students ages 11 to 13 with at least three years of consistent dance training are interviewed, and audition to participate in this unique training program. All classes within this program guide the technical development and audition preparation of students. Under the guidance of the LEAP instructor, students participate in two ballet classes, two modern classes and an elective of their choice.

Gestures Dance Ensemble
GESTURES
BY AUDITION ONLY, GESTURES is the pre-professional resident dance company of Harbor Conservatory for the Performing Arts. The ensemble is a performance workshop designed for students age 13 and older. In addition to having the desire to pursue their dance training in an intense accelerated program, five years or more of technical training is the prerequisite for those students who wish to audition. Designed as a professional company, the ensemble provides an in-depth curriculum (weekly 3 hour rehearsal, company ballet, jazz, pointe variations and choreography) to support the physical, technical and artistic demands of the repertoire. With a rigorous training and performance schedule, the ensemble provides a venue for dancers to hone performance skills in an environment that becomes a laboratory for the young dancers to enhance their craft. THE LITTLE PEOPLE’S CREATIVE ARTS PROGRAM
Children will explore their world through music, dance and theater. Classes nurture curiosity, promote creativity and introduce basic music, dance and theater skills.

LITTLE MOVEMENT EXPLORERS
Children will further develop their motor skills by exploring movement that is based on traditional dance elements. Children sing songs, listen to fairy tales and stories that inspire their own imaginative dances.
Age: 4

YOUNG MOVERS & SHAKERS
Children participate in simple warm-ups designed to increase flexibility, explore coordination and develop memory recall. Children learn basic short movement phrases which promote body awareness and challenge motor skill development.

ME & MY INSTRUMENT
This class teaches basic music-making. Based on the methodology of composer Carl Orff, children learn to listen and respond to the music by moving feet, hands, arms and the whole body. Children also explore the use of their voices as instruments as they sing songs that reinforce rhythm, time, syncopation and more. Small percussive instruments also help define these musical concepts and encourage a sense of fun.

THEATRE EXPOSURE
Physical and vocal expression take flight! Imaginations come to life! Students are introduced to the world of Theatre via an array of fun theatre exercises. Basic vocabulary, breathing, projecting, entrances, exits and creating characters are guaranteed to focus the active child and build confidence in the shy one.
